Remember me? I’ve been sewing and making, but obviously not so great about posting. I’m hoping to catch up with some recent projects in the coming weeks. For now, check out these velvet pants and dress I made for V and E. I ordered the fabric in time for Thanksgiving, cut them out in time for Christmas, and actually sewed them around New Year’s.

Violet was able to wear her dress to the recent Father Daughter dance at her elementary school, and I hope they’ll be able to wear them for Easter, but you never know around here with the weather.

Both kids are thin enough that I should really sew a smaller size with extra length. That said, I expect these will last until next Thanksgiving as they both have quite a bit of room to grow into.

Last week I whipped up a couple of Purl Bee Cozy Sewn Cowls for the kids. I’d considered making them for Christmas presents, but then decided I wanted to give the kids a chance to choose their fabric. Emmett went for punctuation, and Violet wanted birds. With our cold weather around New Year’s, we got some good wear in.

SONY DSCDon’t they look cozy?

SONY DSCNotice Violet in her too small hat I made her a couple of years ago from the Oliver and S Little Things to Sew book. Emmett is also wearing a reversible hat I made several years ago. I realize now that I never posted either here.

SONY DSCI love to see these kids all bundled up in things I made for them. The weather’s back up in the 60s this week, so we’ll see how much more use we get out of them this year. 🙂

Here is the rest of my yuletide crafting for this year.

Because I felt conflicted about buying either an artificial or real tree, a cardboard Christmas tree:

SONY DSCWe also had this one up. I made a wall hanging from some tree-print canvas fabric sold by IKEA (I bought it off of Ebay because it’s not for sale this year). It’s a full 6 feet tall. At my dad’s recommendation, I sewed a string of Christmas lights right to the fabric, making it surprisingly life-like.

SONY DSCGift tags made out of wool felt:

SONY DSCBirds added to store-bought tees for V and E, fabric from a pair of pants worn threadbare by both:

SONY DSCAshley got a cashmere beanie made out of an old sweater, not pictured here.

It didn’t feel like I’d done much aside from the advent calendar, but in the end all the little things added up. For me, I’ve just started a new sweater. After ripping out the almost complete Antrorse sweater a second time, I’ve started the Camilla Pullover, using the same yarn:

Fingers crossed that I’ll like it more!

Happy New Year!

Merry Merry!

As promised, I’m back with pictures of the advent calendar, which I finished none too soon on December 3. It was up and in use on the the 1st, but I still had two final ornaments to finish up and secret away into the pockets. It was a hit, with V and E taking turns each night to put an ornament up.

SONY DSC

I’m relieved to have this project done and added into our list of Christmas traditions. I didn’t fully consider how much work 24 of everything would be. I’m glad it turned out so beautifully. Each ornament is a little treasure.

SONY DSC

I’ve also done the usual holiday baking in the last week or so, including these lovely cookies using cookie cutters gifted to me by my very thoughtful mom.

SONY DSC

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope you have a peaceful, joyful holiday season.

xo,
S

Two and a half months since my last post. Oof! The advent calendar is done and in use – pictures to come.

In the meantime, I made this penguin for Emmett’s third birthday back in November using a free pattern from The Purl Bee. His very favorite stuffed animal is a now-ratty penguin he got around Christmas last year (called Peng-one). This new one is called Other Henry. Not to be confused with Emmett’s imaginary friend/tow truck Henry.

SONY DSCSONY DSC
Suspicious and happy.

SONY DSC

Just happy.

SONY DSC

He was also very happy about this cake:

Rahr!

I actually drafted this post in January. I cut out these pieces way back then to get a start on an advent calendar, knowing it would be a long and slow project. Each pocket will contain a felt Christmas ornament, which will go up on the Christmas tree.

Fast forward eight months, and I’ve again picked up this project. This past week, I finally started cutting out some ornaments. I have a little over two months to finish all the pockets and 24 ornaments. Wish me luck!

Our little Emmett started preschool a few weeks ago. His sister Violet has a special blanket she takes to school for naptime, which was given to us by a friend when she was a baby. Despite my best intentions, I did not finish Emmett’s blanket in time for the first week of school. Week three’s close enough, right?

Here’s the back side – cozy flannel cut from some old receiving blankets.

SONY DSC

The top is miscellanous quilting cottons, mostly organic, mostly from a sample pack I got a while back. Emmett likes the tractors best. I was afraid it might be too much of a hodgepodge as I started sewing it together, but I’m really pleased with it after all.

SONY DSC

Emmett absolutely loves it. He literally squealed with delight when I gave it to him. He had seen it while I was working on it, but he was just so excited that it was done, and immediately did this.

It makes me wish I could make him something every day. It’s good for all of us that I don’t/can’t.

This is my 50th post! I know I’ve been inconsistent about posting, but I feel pretty good looking back on all I’ve accomplished with two kids, graduate school, and now full-time work. And with this post, I’m all caught up from recent months. Thanks for reading!

Pattern: Ruby Top by Made by Rae
Fabric: 1 1/3 yards Comma by Moda Fabrics, picked up at our local quilt shop, plus some soft white cotton and bias tape left over from my Sprinkles Top
Time to Complete: A couple of hours, I think. Much quicker thanks to already having the bias tape done
Favorite part: Punctuation!

I love this one! So cute, I think. I love it when I make something that I feel pretty in, and that I know no one else has.

Notice how I did two rows of stitching, for exterior cuteness and to hide my wobbly stitching of the bias tape. I’m sneaky like that.

Pattern: Summer Whimsy Sundress – free tutorial from Caila Made
Fabric: Dear Stella, Sprinkles in Multi for the center panels, 1000 Cranes by Cloud 9 Organics  (as seen in the Sorbetto top)
Time to Complete: 2 or so hours, much of which was spent on the shirring
Favorite parts: Green accents and pink moons
Violet’s favorite parts: Pockets, though I’ve yet to see her use them

Isn’t this dress sweet? You’ll recognize the sprinkles fabric from my Sorbetto top and the green bits from Lily’s doll. I finished this one right at a month ago. Violet pretty much only wants to wear skirts and dresses these days, so I’ve been adding to her collection. It’s just right for the Nevada summer weather.
